looking at dark sky at night for a while, you may see a red star. it has dazzling color. people call it “mars”.

in the solar system, beyond the third planet, the fourth one is “mars”. it is a planet which is far away from earth, about 2 hundred million kilometers on average. it is so charming that many scientists and people want to go there. yes, distance lends enchantment to the view.

exploring space is not as easy as you might think. it is beyond your imagination. scientists still make great contributions to exploring space and they also get good results. space exploration is developing successfully. scientists have made great progress with this project in only a few years’ time.

in the past fifty years, people have launched many detectors into the unknown universe and planets. however, most of them ended with failure. these detectors still helped the scientists and people to know more about this science. the first time they launched the detectors to mars was in 1960s. from then on, two super countries, america and the soviet union, started a competition to explore mars. they never stopped launching detectors to mars. even if two thirds of them failed. however, it didn’t stop us from exploring space.

distance should not be an obstacle to exploring space. at the beginning of 2017. nasa launched two detectors to mars, and both of them landed safty. they sent many useful information to earth. it was really exciting news! before that, a detector launched by europe was lost in universe. it was a shock to the scientific community, but they will never give up.

as a matter of fact, the purpose of launching so many detectors to space is to find a planet with life and the basic element – water.

the moon is far away from earth, but it is the nearest star to earth. people have been fascinated by the moon since ancient times until 1969 when astronauts from america landed on the moon. they found that the moon was just a satellite, without water, air, atmosphere and life, so people’s fantasies about moon were broken. the moon is a real “wide-cold palace”, it also has very bad weather, extremely cold at night and extremely hot during daytime. nothing can subsist on the moon. when the astronauts landed on the moon, it was as if the distance went from 380 thousand kilometers to zero kilometers. all the beautiful fantasies and legends about moon were broken, so people now aim their eyes on mars. they hope that one day the astronauts can step on mars and realize our new dream.

since we know the truth of moon, it is not so tempting to us. but poems about the moon can still give us some yearning.

compare the beginnings of space travel with exploring space today. the exploration of space today is more useful. many people are fond of mars because among the nine planets in the solar system it is the most similar to earth, so we call them “brother planets”. on mars, there is a thin atmosphere lay and some oxygen. the detectors have found that there once exisited water. due to the low gravity, the water all ran into space. the exploration of space is not only helping us know more about the unknown space, but also telling us a way to the new science and possibly a homeland. in other words, people may realize the dream of living on another planets.

even though we knew moon well now, it has many touching legends n ancient times. chang’e is a beauty who ate the elixir and then flew to the moon, she lived in the “wide-cold palace” (moon palce) with a jade rabbit. wugang always cut down the sweet-scented osmanthus trees on moon as a punishment. though these legends are not true, we can still store them in our memories.

why do we care so much about other planets? the reason is that the earth is suffering many troubles. these troubles include: global warming, air pollution, water pollution, the population is quickly increasing, soil deterioration and decreasing natural resoures. the environment is not as good as it once was. all the troubles mentioned above are warnings us that we should pay more attention to the environment, and take care of our mother-earth. don’t make it suffer any more troubles. the reason is simple, we have only one earth. why not cherish it and make it more beautiful.

even mars is the most similar to the earth in the solar system, scientists have said that outer-space is not fit for human beings to live in at the moment. because there is not enough of the necessary thing that we need in space. we can’t find the basic thing-water. on other planets, so we should assume the attitude, “looking for a horse while riding a donkey, but not looking for a horse while discarding a donkey.” only remember that we have one earth. it is our duty to protect and cherish it.

in 1990, nasa launched a telescope called “hubble” to the orbit of earth. without the affect of atmosphere, we can see the stars far away about 200 hundred million light-years. it is the farthest area we can see so far in the universe. people learnt a lot with the telescope, and nasa plans to launch a new telescope to space to take the place of “hubble”. it is more modern. we can see longer distance with it. we hope that one day we can know all the secrets about the universe.

october 26th, 2017, in china, the “divin land 5” was launched to space successfully and after 21 hours it landed safty. it proved that we have the ability to conquer space. now scientists in china have started a project to explore the moon. soon detectors have been launched. we hope a good result. the chinese scientists plant to launch “divin land 6” to space next year. we hope that day can come soon.

now, we have full confidence in ourselves. however, before we explore space, we should take care of our only homeland, earth. so that we have the right conditions to explore space and have a good result.

what will human being’s future like? no one knows. please remember to cherish everything we own now. don’t be regretful for the past! looking back at the history, and looking into the future, so we can dominate our destiny.

distance lends enchantment to the view! all my friends, let’s make our world more beautiful!

jane eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. after we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, jane eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:

we remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.

we remember her pursuit of justice. it’s like a companion with the goodness. but still, a virtuous person should promote the goodness on one side and must check the badness on the other side.

we remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. in her opinion, everyone is the same at the god’s feet. though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.

we also remember her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence…

one of the most interesting questions about gullivers travels is whether the houyhnhnms represent an ideal of rationality or whether on the other hand they are the butt of swift's satire. in other words, in book iv, is swift poking fun at the talking horses or does he intend for us to take them seriously as the proper way to act? if we look closely at the way that the houyhnhnms act, we can see that in fact swift does not take them seriously: he uses them to show the dangers of pride.

first we have to see that swift does not even take gullver seriously. for instance, his name sounds much like gullible, which suggests that he will believe anything. also, when he first sees the yahoos and they throw excrement on him, he responds by doing the same in return until they run away. he says, "i must needs discover some more rational being," even though as a human he is already the most rational being there is. this is why swift refers to erasmus darwins discovery of the origin of the species and the voyage of the beagle-to show how gulliver knows that people are at the top of the food chain. but if lemule gulliver is satirized, so are the houyhnhnms, whose voices sound like the call of castrati. they walk on two legs instead of four, and seem to be much like people. as gulliver says, "it was with the utmost astonishment that i witnessed these creatures playing the flute and dancing a vienese waltz. to my mind, they seemed like the greatest humans ever seen in court, even more dextrous than the lord edmund burke" . as this quote demonstrates, gulliver is terribly impressed, but his admiration for the houyhnhnms is short-lived because they are so prideful. for instance, the leader of the houyhnhnms claims that he has read all the works of charles dickens, and that he can singlehandedly recite the names of all the kings and queens of england up to george ii. swift subtly shows that this houyhnhnms pride is misplaced when, in the middle of the intellectual competition, he forgets the name of queen elizabeths husband.

swifts satire of the houyhnhnms comes out in other ways as well. one of the most memorable scenes is when the dapple grey mare attempts to woo the horse that guenivre has brought with him to the island. first she acts flirtatiously, parading around the bewildered horse. but when this does not have the desired effect, she gets another idea: "as i watched in amazement from my perch in the top of a tree, the sorrel nag dashed off and returned with a yahoo on her back who was yet more monstrous than mr. pope being fitted by a clothier. she dropped this creature before my nag as if offering up a sacrifice. my horse sniffed the creature and turned away." it might seem that we should take this scene seriously as a failed attempt at courtship, and that consequently we should see the grey mare as an unrequited lover. but it makes more sense if we see that swift is being satiric here: it is the female houyhnhnm who makes the move, which would not have happened in eighteenth-century england. the houyhnhm is being prideful, and it is that pride that makes him unable to impress gullivers horse. gulliver imagines the horse saying, sblood, the notion of creating the bare backed beast with an animal who had held mr. pope on her back makes me queezy .

a final indication that the houyhnmns are not meant to be taken seriously occurs when the leader of the houynhms visits lilliput, where he visits the french royal society. he goes into a room in which a scientist is trying to turn wine into water (itself a prideful act that refers to the marriage at gallilee). the scientist has been working hard at the experiment for many years without success, when the houyhnmn arrives and immediately knows that to do: "the creature no sooner stepped through the doorway than he struck upon a plan. slurping up all the wine in sight, he quickly made water in a bucket that sat near the door" .

he has accomplished the scientists goal, but the scientist is not happy, for his livelihood has now been destroyed. swifts clear implication is that even though the houyhnhmns are smart, they do not know how to use that knowledge for the benefit of society, only for their own prideful agrandizement.

throughout gullivers travels, the houyhnhms are shown to be an ideal gone wrong. though their intent might have been good, they don't know how to do what they want to do because they are filled with pride. they mislead gulliver and they even mislead themselves. the satire on them is particularly well explained by the new born houyhnhm who, having just been born, exclaims, "with this sort of entrance, what must i expect from the rest of my life!" .

After reading this wonderful story, I can feel love, brave, deep friendship and some other good spirits in the people.

The Scarecrow wanted some brains, but on the way to the Emerald City, he thought out of a way to cross the river. The Cowardly Lion wanted to be brave, but when they met the river, he carried other friends to jump across it. And the Tin Man wanted a heart, he said he couldn’t love, but he didn’t want to hurt any animal.

In fact, they all have the things they want: the Scarecrow is clever, the Cowardly Lion is brave and the Tin Man is kind-hearted.

This book tells us a story of how a little girl Dorothy goes back to her hometown when she is in another strange city. Dorothy is a little girl who lived with her aunt and uncle in Kansas. The weather there is very bad, sometimes there was a cyclone. When a cyclone came, people stayed under their houses. But one day a cyclone blows Dorothy’s house, with Dorothy and her dog Toto in it, to a country called Oz. In that city there are four witches and a very famous wizard—the Wizard of Oz. And Dorothy’s house just fell on the bad Witch of the East and killed her, so the people there were very happy. Dorothy took the witch’s red shoes and wore them. She wanted to go home to Kansas but she doesn’t know how to get there. So the Witch of North told her to go to the Emerald City to find the Wizard of Oz to help her. Then Dorothy met the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, but they need help too. The Scarecrow wanted some brains, the Tin Man wanted a heard, and the Cowardly Lion wanted to be brave. So they all take the yellow brick road to the Emerald City. On the way to the Emerald City they met some difficulties, but they solved them successfully. After they met the Wizard of Oz, the wizard gave them another challenge—to kill the bad Witch of the West and they accept. During the way to the Witch of the West’s house, they were caught by the witch and Dorothy was requested to work for her. One day, when the witch tried to catch Dorothy’s red shoes, Dorothy threw some water on the witch by accident and the Witch of the West disappeared. Only water can kill her. So Dorothy went back to the Emerald City with her friends but they found the Wizard of Oz is not a real wizard, he is also a man came from Kansas, and he is just a conjurer. He wanted to go back to Kansas too. So he made a big balloon and prepared to go. But when the balloon is going to raise, Dorothy’s dog Toto jumped away to run after a cat, so Dorothy had to get Toto back and they were left in Oz. Then Dorothy and Toto went and find the Witch of the South and the witch told them they can just use the red shoes on Dorothy’s feet, they’re a pair of magic shoes, they could take anybody go back to their home as soon as she said‘East, west—home is the best!’After Dorothy said goodbye to her friends, she went back to her new home with her dog. It’s really a wonderful risk.

Yes, no matter where we are, home is always the best place for us to rest or study. There are our parents here; there are also our favorite things here. At home, we feel safe, we feel comfortable, and we can relax ourselves.

From this story, we can see Dorothy is a brave and kind-hearted girl. She killed the two bad witches in Oz; she helped the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion to go to the Emerald City to find the Wizard and get what they want. She solved problems when they met difficulties. It’s really not easy for such a little girl.

We also learn that teamwork is important for us. When we are in trouble, we can ask our friends for help, and also, when our friends need help, we should go and help them. Just remember, more people, more power. It’s always better has more people to do a thing. Teamwork is really necessary in our lives.

And we can see the Scarecrow is absolutely cleaver, he understands things, he can think, he learn quickly, and he suggested Dorothy to cut down a tree to cross the river. The tin man has a kind heart, he laughs, he cries, he loves, he feels sorry for people. The Cowardly Lion is really brave, he did a lot of brave things, he carried the friends to go across the river, and he wanted to find some food for his friends and so on. We should learn from them too. When we are in trouble, we should calm down, watch the things around carefully, and try to think out of a way to solve it, just like the Scarecrow. We also should be brave as we are in danger, we can’t be afraid, we should face the difficulty and try to go through it, just like the Cowardly Lion. And we should learn to love people, to feel sorry for people, to make more friends, to get on well with everyone around us, just like the Tin Man.

Yes, we should learn how to get on with other people, we should help each other, we should be brave, we should love other people. If we can do like this, we can be a better girl (boy), more and more people will make friends with us, and more and more people will like us!

sense and sensibility was the first jane austen published. though she initially called it elinor and marianne, austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. the story revolves around the dashwood sisters, elinor and marianne. whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. commenting on edward ferrars, a potential suitor for elinor's hand, marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister.

soon however, marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: mr. willoughby, a new neighbor. so swept away by passion is marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. then willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, elinor's growing affection for edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. how each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel. though marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is elinor whom austen herself most evidently admired; a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure.

Little Women

Before I read this book, I had watched a cartoon movie made by Japan. So I have a strong interest on it.

It all begins in the dead of winter; The Christmas Season. The coldest one of all, were the war has made fuel for heating very scarce. While her husband is off at war, Marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy.

On Christmas Eve, Marmee has just arrived home from passing out food to the less fortunate with a letter from her husband, the girls' father. The all gather together around the fire to read the letter. Afterwards, the girls are teary eyed. Marmee kisses them and they are off to bed.

Jo is longing to become a writer. So, every night she stays up late writing the script for soap operas. As morning comes she is the last one awake. The table is set, and food prepared for their Christmas feast.

As dusk falls, the girls are all up in the attic acting out Jo's play, which she reads from the local (fake) newspaper. As they are performing, their rich, next-door neighbors grandson watches from the window.

The 2 oldest girls: Jo and Meg, get ready to attend the Christmas Ball. While Jo is curling Meg's hair, there is a strange smell to the air. Amy screams, Megs hair is being singed. They continue digging through the old clothes bin for a pair of white gloves.

One of the prominent themes in Little Women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. During the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways -- physically, intellectually, and especially emotionally. One question which readers must ask themselves is whether the views the characters have on the coming of age process are shared by Alcott. If they aren't, what are Alcott's views and how do they differ from those of the women in her story?

It is interesting to examine the last half of Chapter 20, "Confidential." Jo addresses the maturation issue as she speaks with Marmee of the situation between Meg and Mr. Brooke. The possible love between these two represents one of the very important aspects in coming of age for a teenage girl. Jo treats this natural process as if it were some sort of disease, however. Jo cannot understand why Meg would want to stop behaving "like a sensible creature" (p.202), and refers to love as "such nonsense."

about six years ago, the movie twight was a great success, hundred of teenagers became the fans. the movie tells about a girl named bella who is falling in love with a vampire edward, it seems that love can’t happen between them, but it happens. bella ignores what other people tells her that she will get hurt and even get herself killed, she makes up her mind that she must be together with edward. bella’s love is so strong that she leaves everything behind. on my opinion, bella’s love is not a wise choice, her strong love makes her turn deaf ears to others, even her parents. bella’s love is such skin deep, she abandons her responsibility, she even puts herself in a dangerous situation. as an adult, we should be mature, such love is not acceptable. love should be built in responsibility.

Can Human Determine Their Own Destiny?

i have never been to troy, but david maule made me feel as if i were standing on the high wall of troy, watching the fierce war. thanks to this british author, who adapted the famous homer’s poem into a lively story, i found it easier to understand this story. though the story happened over 3000 years ago in a remote place, i was deeply fascinated by it.

the mysterious plot is one of the reasons why i loved the story of troy so much, yet i am more interested in the human heroes of the war.

hector was the eldest son of king of troy, priam. he was not only a real hero of trojan, but was regarded the highest moral hero in greek classic by later historians. the war started because of the mischief of his brother, paris, whom he didn’t appreciate. however, since hector was the commander of the trojan army, he was obliged to fight with all force. it was really a tragedy that such a valiant man died in the duel with another great warrior, achilles.

it is natural to see death in a war. as a famous chinese parable says, “a life can be as slight as a piece of feather, or as weighty as mount tai.” sometimes, one’s glory walks hand in hand with one’s doom. achilles was such a typical person. his personal charm made the story of troy more attractive. he was so crucial because his every appearance in a war encouraged his fellow soldiers and terrified the enemies. actually, achilles was half-god who was almost invincible in people’s mind. that’s why his name was memorized long after his death.

besides the two great men, the wisdom of odysseus also proved him to be a great hero. he didn’t want to attend the war because he was happily married and had a lovely son. however, since his country was allied to mycenae, he had to take the command given by the king of mycenae. i’m quite sure that the story of the wooden horse is widely known, however, few people know who thought of the brilliant idea, that’s why i admired odysseus so much because he was the person who got the idea. thanks to the horse, the ten-year war came to an end at last. if you want to know how the wooden horse worked, just read the book.

the ancient greeks believed that the gods and goddesses also played important roles in the origin, process and ending of the whole story.

the story of the golden apple was such an example. when eris, the goddess of argument and disagreement, threw out the golden apple to a wedding ceremony on mount olympus, a dispute happened. hera, the queen of gods, athena, the goddess of wisdom, and aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, were all involved in the argument for the apple. none of them was willing to give way, so they turned to paris for a final judgment. tempted by aphrodite’s beauty and promise, paris handed the apple to her. to keep her word, aphrodite helped him to get helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, as his wife. that was the cause of the war.

paris’s choice obviously annoyed the other two goddesses. so during the war, they helped the greek alliance army while some other gods, such as apollo and aphrodite, guarded troy. when paris dueled with helen’s former husband menelaus, aphrodite saved paris when he was about to be finished off.

after the duel between those two people, there was a truce between the greek alliance and troy. however, both hera and athena were not happy to see it. hera pursued her husband zeus:“ now, will you send athena to make the troyjans break the peace?”(page 22) then with zeus’s permission, athena went down to start the war again and finally she brought the greeks to success.

from the whole story, we can see that in ancient greeks’ view, gods sometimes played a much more important role in their life. however, with the rapid development of science, we have learned that the greek gods never existed. this is why a recent movie of troy has not mentioned a single god. everything happened due to men’s ambition, love, loyalty or jealousy. with those emotion and people’s effort, we human beings can accomplish wonders and be master of the world.

god are of less importance than they used to be. nonetheless, the gods and goddesses made the story of troy more mysterious and marvelous.

i have learnt from the book more than the wonderful story of history, love and war. i believe that human can determine their destiny by their own. i highly recommend this book to my friends with the same interest.
