八達嶺長城有三臺兩牆組成，什麼是三臺兩牆呢?現在讓我給大家來講解一下。三臺分別是城臺、敵臺、烽火臺。其中城臺構造簡單，只是駐守的官兵避風寒的地方。那敵臺的構造相對就要複雜一點，分爲兩層，上層是由田，井，回等字形組成，上層有垛口和望孔是觀察軍情和射箭用的，所以這裏也具有防禦敵人的功能。
下面就到了烽火臺，烽火臺又叫烽燧，狼煙臺。是不和長城相連的獨立建築。一旦敵人來犯，就點燃烽火通報軍情，古人將白天點燃的煙叫做烽，晚上的叫做燧。明朝哦的時候，還對烽火與敵人的關係做了嚴格的規定：敵人百餘個，燃一煙點一炮;五百人，燃二煙點二炮;千人以上，三煙三炮;伍仟人以上，四煙四炮;萬上以上，五煙五炮。就通過這種方式，在邊關的軍情能飛速的傳遞到皇城中。
