Development and the Environment
It is undeniable that the worsening environment has become the biggest concern of the present-day world. Land resources are dwindling because of water loss and soil erosion. Waste gases poison the air we breathe. The rivers and lakes are polluted by waste dumped in them from factories. It is probably no exaggeration to say that deterioration of the quality of the environment threatens the existence of mankind itself.
Some people are of the opinion that the environmental problem is the price we have to pay for economic development. But I do not think that this argument is valid. After all, what is the point of economic growth if people’s lives are adversely alfected by worsening environmental pollution?
There is plenty of evidence to show that sustainable development can be achieved by balancing economic growth with protection of the environment. The key to achieving this is to make people aware of the seriousness of the problem. Both governments and ordinary citizens should join hands to make this world a better place to live in, not only for ourselves, but also for future generations.

As we know, in the past few centuries, human have made countless remarkableachievements in science and technology to explore the mysterious world uering nature with powerful tools, people have achieved material while, environment has been badly damaged. So a series of severe problemscome along, such as species extinction, energy crisis, incurable diseases, thethree main pollutions etc. All of these factors bring our beautiful planetdisasters, humanity as well. Let me show you some statistics. According to thereport from World Wide Fund for Nature, the species of entire world havedeclined by 52 % since 1970. That means about 75 kinds of precious speciesdisappear forever from the Earth each day. In addition, scientists claimed thathuman now need one and a half Earth to meet the demand for natural her frightening data from the UN in 20__, there are almost 8.4 millionpeople around the world who die of cancers caused by environmental issues everyyear. It is so horrible, isn’t it? Man has taken too much from nature, also paidsuch a heavy price for it. If we don’t try to change these situations, what willhappen one or two centuries later?
But, fortunately, the majority throughout the world are aware of thesignificance of environmental protection. Much many individuals,environmentalists and organizations have taken actions spontaneously. Companiesdonate part of their profits to support some green projects. Moreover,Government has carried out many policies to conserve endangered species, supportgreen industries and encourage people to live a green life. From a globalperspective, though it is a long journey to make the Earth recovered and to livein harmony with it, I do believe that, with everyone’s efforts, we will finallyget there.

Everyone has a dream. Now I'll talk about my dream i What is my dream? I often ask myself. When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a soldier with a gun so that I could defend our motherland.
Now I am a young boy with a new dream——to be a doc-tor. I want to be a famous doctor, helping the sick and saving their lives. Why has my dream changed? Well, at the age of 11 I was ill, badly ill. I was told that I had cancer. I had to leave both my school and my friends and go to the hospital. Every day I suf-fered the troubles caused by this illness.
I also saw some people who were suffering and dying of ill-nesses. I made up my mind to become a doctor, so that I can help the sick people and cure them of their diseases. China is a develop-ing country. She needs good medicine and good doctors, especially in the countryside and lonely villages.

Some years ago I took on an assignment in a southern county to work withpeople on public welfare. What I wanted to do was to show that everybody has thecapacity to be self-sufficient and all we have to do is to activate them. Iasked the county to pick a group of people who were on public welfare, peoplefrom different racial groups and different family constellations. I would thensee them as a group for three hours every Friday. I also asked for a littlepetty cash to work with as I needed it.

That helped the group to begin to dream. The seemingly small successesallow the group to see that dreams were not insane. The small steps began to getpeople to see and feel that something really could happen.

Everyone found something. The man who put in the screen door became a handyman, and another woman who took in the children became a licensed foster careperson. In twelve weeks, I had all these people off public welfare. I’ve notonly done that once. I’ve done it many times.
每個人者倒淺到一些值得重視的東西。那位裝紗門的男士後來成爲一名勤雜工。另外一位帶小孩的婦女成爲一名手寺證護衛廷人員。幫助所有的小組成員擺脫福利救濟總共用了12周時間。這不是一次性完成的，而是分好幾次。逐步努力實現的。

But the dreams are like small seeds planted in their hearts; like the beacon in the sea that lead them to their destinations.
Dream is the fountain of strength. Dream is the support of faith. Dream is the Polaris. Dream reminds us to move forward, to struggle, to strive all the time. One of my friends told me that dream will never discard anyone! Yes, maybe one day everything is gone but dreams is still there with you, eternally.
