Since I was young I have always had a keen interest in the way that thethings around me work. From marvelling at the telephone to how planes can fly, engineering advances have never failed to captivate me. For this reason, I havealways tried to find out how such things function, and about how they have hadan impact on the society we live in today. Coupled with the fact that I havealways enjoyed the logical and problem-solving processes involved in maths andphysics, I decided several years ago to embark on a career in engineering.

Since then, I have endeavoured to find out as much about engineering aspossible. I researched the great engineers such as Brunel, and discovered thegreat works they had completed. I have attended several engineering conferences, the most recent of which I was selected to speak live on radio about myexperiences. And once I had completed several weeks' worth of work experience, Iwas assured that it was the career that I wanted to pursue.

This summer, I took part in the Nuffield Bursary scheme for a month, working in a team, at Aerogistics Ltd. Our project was to analyse and implementa new system for the distribution of consumable materials to the individualdepartments within the company. We found the current system to be highlyinefficient and after much data gathering and thought, presented our findings tothe senior managers of the company who agreed with our ideas. The last week wasspent starting the implementation of these ideas. I found the experience to behighly challenging, yet rewarding especially as it led to me gaining a GoldCrest Award. I also found it useful as I got to see engineers at work and thedaily problems that they face. I learnt that there is a lot more to being a goodengineer than possessing technical competence, although this is undoubtedlyimportant; team work, communication and leadership skills are vital as well.

I have also recently been selected to complete two placements with armyengineers. One of these placements will focus on the more practical side ofengineering while the other will focus on the skills needed by a professionalengineer focussing on project planning and leadership. I hope to find theexperience useful.

In my spare time I like to play sport and music. In secondary school I wascaptain for the Netball and Football teams, as well as taking part in variousother sports. The experience of this greatly improved my team working abilitiesas well as my fitness. As a keen musician I am working towards my grade 5 theoryand grade 7 practical on cello. I am a member of a Youth Orchestra, and havejust recently completed a tour of Italy. I am also in the school orchestra andhave led several orchestras in the past, before progressing to the LYO.

In school, I am Deputy Head Girl, helping to lead a team of over 40prefects. I find this to be a challenging and stimulating role and believe ithas developed my confidence immensely. As well as carrying out the normal dutiesof a prefect, such as supervising younger students, I must lead and manage theother prefects. My role involves arranging rotas, organising after school eventssuch as the Year 7 social and parent's evenings and public speaking as well asother responsibilities, which have developed my communication, organisation andleadership skills immensely. The role requires a lot of commitment, but it hashelped to improve my time management, as I try to strike a balance between itand school work, which is my main priority. I have also been selected to competein the Physics Olympiad and have been entered for the Biology AdvancedExtension.

During my time at university I hope to gain a good degree, which will standme in good stead for when I enter the world of work. I would like to continue myeducation in a place where I can thrive both academically and socially, andwhere I can put my determination and motivation into good use. Thank you.

In a highly competitive environment, the ability to create competitiveedges over one's adversaries and to achieve ultimate victory in fiercecompetitions depends not so much on materials resources as on the mental factorsof intelligence and concepts. Those concepts that can lead to new visions andperspectives and those approaches that can effectively solve problems will havethe greatest value. The overriding factor which ensures the eventualmaterialization of new concepts and gives rise to effective approaches ismanagement. As a branch of applied science, the science of management hascrucial value not only for developing countries like China which are makinguttermost efforts to catch up with the developed countries, but also for theleading multinational giants in the developed countries themselves. For a personlike me who has decided to pursue marketing management as my career objective,to sharpen my intellectual caliber, to understand the essence of management andto grasp important skills of management have become my greatest aspiration.

As a Master's student specializing in marketing and enterprise strategies,I am very proud to report that I have made some encouraging researchachievements. Of the two research papers that I wrote concerning strategicdevelopment of enterprises-Enterprise Strategic Alliance Based on ResourceComplementarity and The Strategic Orientation and Countermeasures for ChineseEnterprises in International Operations in the New Millennium, the former hasbeen published by Economic Tribune in Sept. 20__ and the latter has beenaccepted for publication by China Economists in Feb. 20__. These two researchpapers are the fruition of my active involvement in a research project namedStudy on Chinese Enterprises' Cooperation-Competition Models inHyper-Competitive Conditions, which is sponsored by China State Natural ScienceFoundation (Foundation Project No. 70140132)。 Another paper entitled BrandMarketing: A Competitive Mode on a Higher Level in Modern Economics has beenpublished by Contemporary Finance & Economics in November this year. Thoseresearch achievements can unmistakably indicate my tremendous potential toperform much more ambitious researches in my future degree program and I amdetermined to develop this potential to the fullest extent.

I completed my four-year systematic studies in Engineering and ManagementScience as an undergraduate at the School of Economics and Management, BeijingUniversity of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is precisely this undergraduateeducation that has reinforced my determination to pursue marketing management asmy lifelong career. Although as an undergraduate my understanding of somecourses cannot be described as profound (some might even be said to be rathersuperficial), my learning of those courses nevertheless widened my ken ofknowledge and broadened my vision.

In order to further enrich myself, I availed myself of every opportunity ofacademic exchange both on campus and off campus. I shuttled among PekingUniversity, Central Finance and Economics University, and China RenminUniversity on my bicycle in order to attend lectures delivered by the country'sleading scholars and entrepreneurs. Those lectures constituted an importantsupplement to my in-class training because they were immediately connected withthe realities of Chinese society. I also benefited importantly from myextracurricular activities. As minister of the Department of Social Practices ofthe School's Students Union, I planned and organized the School's Festival ofthe Art of Management. I also canvassed Pepsi Company to sponsor ouruniversity's basketball league match. In launching those activities, I improvedmy organizational and managerial skills. In retrospection, my undergraduateprogram was most strengthened by my self-conscious attention to various appliedsubjects-higher mathematics, statistics and probability, linear algebra, operations research, etc. It can be said that my undergraduate education (inwhich my overall scholastic performance ranked top 4th in my class consisting of30 students) enabled me to make some basic preparations in theoretical knowledgeand in the application of mathematical tools.

From Sept. 1998 to April 20__, my employment with Hisense Group in QingDaoCity, Shandong Province (one of the largest manufacturers of electricalappliances in China) was a major opportunity to practice what I had learned. Thesecond year I joined the Group, the most fierce price warfare happened toChina's electrical appliances industry. Manufacturers reduced the prices oftheir products to unprecedented low levels in order to maximize their marketshare. As an act of market competition, the Marketing Department where I workedlaunched Traveling Expositions of Hisense Products. As one of the four keypersonnel of the department, I planned and organized a series of exhibitions inmost major cities in China. Our one-year efforts achieved remarkable marketeffects. In Shijiazhuan City, for instance, of a total of 30 brands, our salesof televisions and air conditioners accounted for 24% and 18% respectively in20__. In that year's performance evaluation, I was awarded the Group's ModelEmployee.

My understanding of marketing was enriched and modified by my 2-yearpractical work experience. To me, marketing was not merely composed of suchelements as product designing, promotion through advertising, pricing models, and distribution channels. It also encompassed the analysis of the behavior bothof your competitors and of consumers, studies in organization behavior, brandmanagement, and decision-makings. Believing that a more systematic educationwould contribute to a more successful career, I went back to my alma mater inSeptember 20__ and went on with a Master's program in Engineering and ManagementScience in order to gain knowledge on a higher professional level, to follow themost updated academic information, and to improve my managerial caliber.

Backed by my work experience, my academic focus became better-defined and Iwas more self-motivated in my studies. With a comprehensive coursework coveringadvanced mathematical planning, decision-making strategies, managementstatistics, and fuzzy mathematics, I achieved obvious improvement in theoreticalknowledge and in the application of tools. I developed broader perspectives andwas able to conduct my research from more advanced professional levels. Mythesis, entitled A Study of Enterprises' Strategic Alliances Based on anAnalysis of Resource Complementarity, presented a wholly novel explanation ofcorporate alliances from the perspective of resource integration, a perspectivewhich differed fundamentally from the conventional view held by most scholarswhich explained the necessity and justification of corporate alliance from theangle of transaction cost and value chain.

Instead of feeling contented with my high GPA for the Master's program(3.6), I have come to realize how much there is still for me to learn in thefield of management, especially in marketing. Most universities in China treatmarketing purely as a theoretical course, with neither case analysis noropportunities for students to practice the theories they have learned. In termsof curriculum, studies in marketing psychology and individual behavior havehardly been undertaken. Moreover, the lack of analytical tools has resulted ininsufficient analysis of the market feedback. Realizing that such deficienciescan scarcely be overcome within a short period of time, I believe that a moresuccessful career must be pursued through a Ph.D. program outside China, ideallyin a first-rate university in the United States.

With my undergraduate and graduate background in engineering and managementscience, I would like to focus on one of the following areas in your ram: a. marketing management; b. behavioral approaches to marketing orconsumer behavior; and c. channels of distribution. I have also drawn up mytentative career objective. I will complete my doctoral program by undertakingextensive researches and carrying out some specific projects. After obtaining mydegree, I will seek some teaching experiences in an American university whilecontinuing with advanced researches on the latest research topics. In this way Ican keep developing my academic aptitudes. After accumulating sufficientteaching and research experience, I will seek a teaching position in aprestigious university in China where I will share with my future students andcolleagues my research findings and the knowledge I have acquired in the UnitedStates. I hope to develop myself ultimately into a leading specialist inmarketing and management who can contribute to bringing Chinese scholarship inthis field onto a more advanced level.

CMU's Ph.D. program in computer science is heavily integrated with researchactivities and is designed to nurture people with raw talent and intellect in anenvironment which permits them thorough immersion in research and program promises to produce well-educated researchers and future leaders incomputer science. I am very excited over this wonderful vision because such aprogram offers me a basis to translate my dreams into realities. Without such aprogram, many of my dreams will remain mere fantasies.

Growing up in a modest village in China, I hardly ever had the chance tosee many examples of modern technology; people who dig wells by hand to obtaindrinking wateruse ox-driven plows to cultivate their fields don’t have much usefor televisiopersonal computers. But when my father gave me an old radio to playwith, I wanted nothing more than to take apart the contraptionsee what i idemade such interesting sounds. Sitting on the floor with a confused grin, surrounded by wiresmetal, I looked up at my fatheraskedthe noises were...

I first read this paragraphMadame Curie as a 14-year-old child,I stillremember how wonderful I felt. I remember thinking, "What esteemed men theywere! How hard they worked!" As I grew older, this paragraph became a source ofencouragement in the face of adversity. I begin to feel a magical blue lighttwinkling in my heart, kindling a love of science, encouraging me to chargebravely into the unknown world.

Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its globalposition. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannotcatch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning fieldin China, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management inEngland. The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to mychildhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modernentrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his businessventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. Mymother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simplecalculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would somedaybe able to enter the realm of business.

With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy mycuriosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I ects on business and management became a special fascination to me and myknowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasingrapidly.

As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the CollegeEntrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were neverexcluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, 20__, Iwas so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in thedepartment of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional ChineseMedicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be afailure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realizedthat I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At thatmoment, I lost my direction and objectives.

My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter offact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some booksabout management by Peter ker. I began to notice something interesting:Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell morethan others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing thesame difficulties?

With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I waslucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch, in Which JohnA. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for acompany. When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. Ishould manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shopeven made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the runthe shop. From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business hasbeen greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I wasdoing. By December, 20__, I had finally determined to take business managementas my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived togain more practical work experience in some big companies.

Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in theArchitecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months, I worked as anassistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the differentdepartments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadenedmy perspective of management conditions and business performance in differentindustries. The experience showed me that management is much more important thanthat of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work inthis company. In May, 20__, the company offered me an opportunity to participatein an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depthdiscussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me topursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual abilityand the brand new ideas I mentioned.

During the short period of training, I realized that pursuing a higherdegree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellencein management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challengingenvironment, I can build the required foundation of knowledge related tomanagement to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission willbe my first step of success. With this in mind, I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.

Yours sincerely,

Dear_Leaders and Teachers:

Hello! I am ___ from Liaohe Oilfield No. 1 Senior High School. Thank you forreviewing my application materials in your busy schedule.

Since I was a child, I have been a little curious about the financialindustry, a little nervous, and some expectations, but in the end it turned intoan infinite yearning, hoping that one day I can be in it and experience theconfusing and ups and downs. The Central University of Finance and Economics isa finance and economics university with a first-level national key discipline ofapplied economics. It has trained a batch of top-notch leaders and is known asthe "cradle of China's financial management experts." dream!

The tension and pressure of high school seem to stimulate my potential andignite my enthusiasm for learning. My grades have always been ranked in theforefront of the year group, with balanced results in various subjects, and morepreference for mathematics, physics and English. High school math and sciencecompetitions are rich in content. The depth and breadth make me feel like seeingeach other late. Since the school did not offer a tutoring class for mathcompetitions, I started to focus on physics competitions in my second year ofhigh school. I secretly established my goal of not winning the first e I wanted to win the first prize too much. On the day of the exam, I stilllost to nervousness. I only won a second prize in the end. Thinking of theholidays when I was soaking in the sea of questions, the training Iparticipated in for thousands of miles, the days and nights when I was fightingin front of the mountain of books, and the students who did not pay much butachieved the same results as me, I have all kinds of grievances and helplessnessin my heart. I have given too much, lost too much, and also let down toomuch-followed by the math competition. After experiencing the setbacks, I seemedto be relieved and easily dealt with it, but in the end, it was my school’sfirst The second place won the second prize. Being able to stand out in thisarea where I am not the main focus has allowed me to regain my confidence. Thisincident triggered my thinking: it is often better to face it easily.

I treat people with enthusiasm and are good at dealing with interpersonalrelationships. I always think that friends are one of the most precioustreasures in life. I cherish friendship with friends very much. Friendship andhappiness are always shared with them. I have troubles, and I share with mypartners.

I have a wide range of hobbies. Movies and books are indispensable companionsin my life. I still keep the habit of watching an original English blockbusterevery week, where I can hear the purest English; I like to read what makes methink deeply. Book, my favorite is Oscar Wilde's "Portrait of Dowling Gray";every day I take time to watch CCTV's financial channel, and I often talk to myclassmates about some hot issues. I often see me on the basketball court. The"scoring king" of the class basketball team is none other than me. I likeplaying basketball. This is an elegant sport and a sport that you can share withyour friends.

My family is harmonious, home is the end of all my troubles and sorrows. I amhappy because I have a father and mother who love me deeply, and I also love medeeply. Growing up in love, I know how to love others, learn to be grateful tothe society, and take responsibility. I have participated in some socialactivities many times, I have been on the stage of some business promotionactivities, I have been an apprentice cleaner, and once helped my junior highschool students in the countryside sell vegetables. I have also visited those inneed of help in welfare homes and orphanages with my teachers and parents manytimes, and I have given my part of love.

Due to my outstanding performance in all aspects, I have won many titles suchas "Three Good Student" and "Excellent League Member". I am a good studentappreciated by teachers and liked by my classmates.

High school life has allowed me to gradually grow from an ignorant teenagerto a thinking, thoughtful, and ambitious young student. If I am lucky enough toenter the Zhongcai campus in the future, I will choose the financial professionwith the most complete set of professional directions in the country. The rapideconomic development will create a broad space for financial talents to use anddevelop. Zhongcai's "rigorous and pragmatic style of study, masters devoted toacademic research, education with equal emphasis on knowledge and action, and aharmonious life of mind and body" have all ignited the light on the road tochasing my dreams. Please teachers give me the opportunity to chase mydreams!
